I could go on and on about this movie and the history behind it, but this infographic is my way of translating that massive cinematic energy into a structured, visual archive of Black resistance.

I made this infographic on the history of the Delta Blues because I fell down a rabbit hole after watching Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The project came from a place of profound admiration for the director and everyone involved in making this beautiful, bloody masterpiece. As a horror movie, it was just brilliant—the abrupt aspect ratio changes alone had the gamer in me jumping up and down in the theater. But as a piece of pop culture media, it did something much heavier: it brought forth a cold, hard truth. The brutal oppression of Black people under Jim Crow is very real and very recent, and from that pain, they gave birth to a genre that permanently rewrote the global music industry. Black people are the blueprint. They are here to condemn the colonizers who not only stole their lands but also tried to pocket their culture.
